Why Choose Polished Concrete Floors?
Polished concrete is more than just a stylish surface – it’s one of the most practical, long-lasting flooring options available.
Key Benefits of Polished Concrete:
- Exceptional Durability – Highly resistant to wear and tear, even in heavy foot traffic areas.
- Low Maintenance – Easy to clean with no need for waxing or recoating.
- Cost-Effective Over Time – Minimal upkeep means reduced lifetime costs compared to other floor coverings.
- Improved Light Reflection – Brighter interiors can reduce lighting costs in commercial spaces.
- Sustainable – Uses the existing slab as the finished surface, eliminating additional materials.
- Customisable Appearance – Choose your level of aggregate exposure and gloss to suit the space.
Three Finishes You Can Achieve
In our How to Polish Concrete Floors video, we demonstrate:
- Cream Finish – Keeps the smooth paste layer with minimal aggregate for a clean, uniform look.
- Salt & Pepper Finish – Lightly exposes fine sands and speckles beneath the surface.
- Full Aggregate Exposure – Cuts deep to showcase the larger decorative stones for a striking terrazzo-style appearance.
Tools & Products We Used
Grinder: Husqvarna PG6XR – variable-speed planetary grinder for accuracy and control (looking to hire we would recommend the T5 or T6)
Vacuum: Nilfisk S3LP – industrial HEPA-filtered vacuum for effective dust management
Tooling:
- Husqvarna Elite Metal Bonds – 25g & 50g
- Boride Ceramic Transitionals – 100g
- Husqvarna Elite Polish Pads – 200g, 400g, 800g
- Boride 8000 Pad – for high-gloss burnishing available from SmartFLoorUK
Chemicals:
- Crete Colours Hard Blend Densifier
- Metzger McGuire SRG Grout
- Crete Colours Ultra Seal – Topical sealer
✅ Safety First: Always wear PPE – dust mask, safety boots, and ear protection.
Step-by-Step: How to Polish Concrete Floors
1️⃣ Initial Grind – Exposing the Aggregate
For full aggregate exposure, we start with 25g metal bond diamonds at slow speed in both directions. The goal is even exposure across the floor with no low spots.
Pro Tip: Vacuum thoroughly after each stage – leftover dust can cause scratches later.
2️⃣ Refinement with 50g Metals
We move to 50g metals to remove the coarse scratches from the first stage. If you’re aiming for a salt & pepper finish, this is your starting grit.
3️⃣ Grouting (Optional but Recommended)
We use Metzger McGuire SRG to fill pinholes, cracks, and small defects. This produces a denser, more uniform surface. After application, we regrind with the same grit to blend it seamlessly.
4️⃣ Ceramic Transitionals
Switch to Boride 100g ceramics to refine the surface and remove any visible metal scratches, prepping the floor for resin polishing.
5️⃣ Densifying – Strength & Clarity
Apply Crete Colours Hard Blend Densifier evenly with a microfibre mop. This strengthens the surface, enhances clarity, and extends the life of the polish.
6️⃣ Resin Polishing Stages
- 200 grit – Matte or honed finish
- 400 grit – Soft satin sheen
- 800 grit – Low-gloss shine
Finish with Boride 8000 pad for a higher gloss and smoother feel. Light water misting helps control dust and heat.
7️⃣ Sealing
We finish with Crete Colours Ultra Seal – a high-performance topical sealer that provides invisible protection without altering the finish.
Other options include:
- Nano Sealers – Invisible, no gloss change
- Penetrating Sealers – Matte to satin look
- Topical Sealers – Glossy “wet look” (requires maintenance)
Problems You May Encounter When Polishing Concrete Floors
Even with the right tools, polishing concrete can present challenges. Here are some common issues and how to solve them:
| Problem | Cause | Solution |
| Uneven Gloss | Missed areas or inconsistent grinding pressure | Maintain consistent machine speed, pressure, and overlapping passes |
| Scratches Remaining | Skipping grits or poor dust removal | Follow each grit stage carefully, vacuum thoroughly |
| Patchy Aggregate Exposure | Uneven slab levels | Use longer initial grinding passes to flatten the surface |
| Dull Finish After Sealing | Contaminants or trapped dust under sealer | Clean thoroughly before sealing, use clean applicators |
| Pinholes & Small Cracks | Natural imperfections in the slab | Use high-quality grout filler like Metzger McGuire SRG |
FAQ – How to Polish Concrete Floors
Q1: How long does it take to polish a concrete floor?
It depends on the size, condition, and finish required. A typical residential floor (50–100m²) can take 2–4 days, while larger commercial spaces may take a week or more.
Q2: Can all concrete floors be polished?
Most concrete slabs can be polished, but the surface must be structurally sound. Very soft, damaged, or extremely uneven slabs may need resurfacing or overlays first.
Q3: How much does it cost to polish concrete floors?
Costs vary depending on location, floor size, and finish level. DIY costs can be reduced by hiring equipment from companies like Multi-Hire Power Tools, while professional polishing services typically start from £40–£70 per m².
Q4: Do polished concrete floors need maintenance?
Yes – while low-maintenance, they should be regularly dust-mopped, damp-mopped with pH-neutral cleaner, and re-sealed every few years for optimal performance.
Q5: Can I polish concrete myself, or should I hire a professional?
You can polish concrete yourself if you have the correct equipment, tooling, and knowledge. However, professional polishers bring experience in troubleshooting, finish consistency, and time efficiency.
