The golden rule of concrete polishing: the bigger the floor grinder, the better the outcome. 415-volt machines work at least three times faster than 110-volt machines due to their weight and power.

  • Concrete Grinder: Use the HTC 420 for light grinds. For most standard jobs, the Husqvarna T5 is recommended. Use the T6 for medium jobs, and the X8 for large-scale industrial spaces. (Note: If you don’t have 415v power on-site, you will need to hire a generator).
  • Vacuum Dust Control Unit: Polishing generates a massive amount of harmful airborne dust. Your vacuum must match your grinder (e.g., the T5 requires an S3 Longopac; the X8 requires a D80).
  • Diamond Metal Polishing Pads (Shoes): Coarse grits (25g, 50g, 80g, 150g) for the initial cut and leveling.
  • Resin/Plastic Polishing Pads: Fine grits (200g, 400g, 800g, 1500g, 3000g) for building the shine. Fenix or premium SF pads are highly recommended.
  • Concrete Densifier: A chemical (like 3DSF or 3DHS) that hardens the concrete surface, preparing it to take a high-gloss polish.

Step-by-Step Concrete Polishing Sequence

Polishing concrete is a strict, multi-step process. You must work through the grits sequentially—skipping a grit will leave visible scratches in the final floor.

  1. Preparation and Repair: Clear the area of all debris and obstacles. Protect nearby walls and baseboards from grinder damage. Fill any large holes, cracks, or imperfections using a concrete filler or patching compound like PG7K or Metzger McGuires Refloor.
  2. Coarse Grinding (25g to 50g Metal Shoes): Attach coarse diamond grinding shoes (start at 25g if the floor is uneven, coated, or if you want heavy aggregate exposure; otherwise, start at 50g). Set the machine to a slow speed (speed 2-3). Push the grinder at a slow walking pace across the whole floor from North to South, overlapping each pass slightly. Once finished, repeat the entire floor East to West. Keep the grinder moving constantly to avoid gouging the floor.
  3. Honing and Grouting (80g to 150g Metal/Ceramic Shoes): Move up to an 80g or 50g metal/ceramic pad to remove the deep scratches left by the first pass. This is the stage where you apply a liquid grout (like GM3000) if you need to fill small pinholes. The dust from grinding mixes with the grout to create a seamless surface. Vacuum the floor thoroughly between every single pass.
  4. Densification (Chemical hardening step): Once the floor is honed and clean, apply a concrete densifier according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This liquid penetrates the pores, reacting with the concrete to harden the surface significantly. You must densify the concrete before moving to resin polishing pads, or the floor will not hold a shine.
  5. Resin Polishing (150g to 400g Plastic/Resin Pads): Switch your machine’s tool holders to velcro pad holders and attach fine-grit resin pads. Start at 150g or 200g. At 200g, the floor will begin to show a slight sheen. Progress to 400g. After the 400g pass, the floor will have a very clean, noticeable shine. For many industrial or matte-preference spaces, you can stop here.
  6. High-Gloss Final Polish (800g, 1500g, and 3000g Resin Pads): To achieve a mirror-like, highly reflective finish, continue walking the floor with progressively finer resin pads. The 800g pad deepens the reflection, the 1500g makes it glassy, and the 3000g pad delivers a flawless, premium high-gloss sheen.
  7. Sealing and Burnishing (Optional but highly recommended): Thoroughly clean the floor to remove all micro-dust. Apply an impregnating sealer (for a natural look) or a topical sealer (for maximum gloss and stain protection) using a microfiber mop. If you apply a high-gloss topical sealer, run a high-speed burnishing machine over the cured floor to lock in the ultimate reflective shine.

  • Patience is Key: Properly grinding and polishing takes time. Let the weight of the machine do the work—don’t force it or rush your walking pace.
  • Vacuum Religiously: Failing to vacuum between grit changes means coarse diamond particles will get trapped under your fine pads, leaving deep, permanent scratches in your final polish.
